DSM releases new all-purpose solar module backsheet


DSM announced the launch of the D15 General Purpose Endurance Backsheet, a product that fills a void in the solar market by providing excellent protection for a wide range of solar panels at an ideal performance-cost ratio.

DSM introduced the D15 Endurance Backsheet to help the industry meet its cost-cutting plan to lower the LCOE of solar energy without sacrificing quality and performance. This new addition to the Endurance backsheet portfolio is based on the same successful coextrusion technology platform as DSM’s existing B-Series with its unique strong polyolefin core and offers excellent protection and durability.

The D15 Endurance Backsheet is a general-purpose backsheet for mainstream applications with proven performance. It’s not just based on technology that’s been bug-free in the field for almost six years. It recently received the world’s first certificate for accelerated aging with an integrated stress sequence from the industry-leading testing and certification organization TÜV SÜD.

This tough material rating simulates natural conditions through a combination of humid heat aging, UV aging, high and low temperature cycle aging, and other sequences, and was introduced amid an unprecedented failure of the backsheet in the industry. According to DuPont’s latest Global PV Reliability Report, 16% of all module failures are related to the backsheet component. That adds up to an estimated module investment of $ 4.5 billion that is at stake in 2020.

Our new D15 Endurance Backsheet addresses this challenge by providing superior module protection based on industry leading technology at affordable prices. “

The Endurance Backsheet D15 is coextruded in a one-step process without adhesive. The result is a strong multi-material product that also has the strongest core layer on the market and is made from polyolefin instead of PET. This in turn enables the D15 backsheet to offer excellent moisture protection and sand abrasion resistance while at the same time offering excellent mechanical, UV and chemical resistance.

The Endurance Backsheet D15 benefits not only performance, but the planet too. The product is made through a fully transparent manufacturing process with full bill of materials traceability. In addition, it offers the same sustainability benefits as the rest of the Endurance backsheet family. The Endurance Backsheet D15 is completely fluorine-free and has a carbon footprint that is up to 30% lower than conventional equivalents. It can be fully recycled with no production waste.
