XL Solar Companions putting in 250-kW PV venture atop Houston workplace constructing

XL Solar Partners is installing a commercial rooftop solar system at FR8T Yard, a commercial office building located at 4245 Richmond Avenue in Houston, Texas. The project is one of the largest commercial solar systems in Houston within the 610 Loop.

XL Solar, a Houston-based full-service solar energy system provider, designed the 250 kW solar system with highly efficient modules to maximize power generation on the project’s limited land area. Inspired by Google’s Project Sunroof – a solar energy mapping initiative to map the Earth’s solar potential that Houston named the most promising city in the United States for solar potential – the FR8T Yard’s rooftop system will soon offset much of its electricity consumption and operating costs while contributing to improve Houston’s environmental footprint.

“It is encouraging to see solar power take off for commercial use in Houston,” said Larry Atherton, president of development for FR8T Yard. “For years homeowners have recognized the benefits of solar energy in reducing energy costs and protecting the environment, and we hope that our system will inspire other companies to install solar systems on their roofs. This project represents a huge step on the way to a net-zero carbon plant and we look forward to decades of environmental responsibility with our tenants. “

This solar project is in line with Mayor Sylvester Turner’s support for solar energy in Houston. Under his leadership, Houston, a member of the C40 Cities Global Climate Leadership Group, has now committed to purchasing 100% renewable energy.

The city is currently the largest municipal renewable energy user in the nation. According to Google’s analysis, “Houston … with an estimated 18,940 gigawatt hours (GWh) of roof area has the largest solar potential of all US cities in the project sunroof data per year.”

“We are delighted that we have been selected to install this system for the FR8T yard,” said Xavier Perez, President of XL Solar. “We are committed to supporting the rapidly growing renewable energy market in Houston by leveraging cutting-edge technology along with our years of clean energy industry experience.”

He said XL Solar has its application in solar projects across Texas.

“With government policies removing market barriers and recognizing the benefits of solar energy, Texas stands ready to become the nationwide leader in solar energy, with an estimated installation of more than 4 GW over the next 5 years,” said Perez. “Project sunroof [shone] a new light on Houston; and the FR8T Yard project is just one of several projects that we have under development in Texas, where we want to implement many large commercial projects. “
